Four Fragrances, Four Atmospheres: Find Your Perfume Incense

From sunlit mornings and rain-soaked forests to intimate evenings and comforting warmth, discover four Japanese-style perfume incense fragrances and the different worlds they invite us into.

If a moment had a fragrance, what would it be?

Some moments have a particular atmosphere that stays with us long after they've passed.

The first warm morning after weeks of grey skies. The smell of a forest after rainfall. An evening spent somewhere beautiful, surrounded by good conversation. The comfort of being home, with nowhere else you need to be.

We remember these moments through images, sounds and feelings. But very often, fragrance is part of the memory too. Perhaps that's why choosing a scent can feel so personal. We don't always know exactly why we're drawn to certain fragrances. Sometimes a note reminds us of a place we've visited, a person we've loved or a feeling we would like to experience again.

At sense • studio • amsterdam, each perfume incense composition begins with this fascination: the relationship between scent, emotion and atmosphere. Inspired by fine perfumery and handcrafted in the Japanese style, the collection brings four distinctive fragrance personalities into the spaces around us. Not simply four different scents, but four different characters.

If you're wondering how to choose perfume incense, I believe the loveliest starting point isn't necessarily a list of ingredients.

It's the atmosphere you're drawn to.

Something bright and floral? Deep and woody? Fresh and green? Or soft and comforting?

Let's explore.

Four Perfume Incense Fragrances at a Glance

Four compositions, each with its own character and a different story to tell.

These are not rules about when or where a fragrance belongs.

They are invitations to imagine.

And perhaps one of them will feel especially familiar.

Goldrise — Bright Citrus and Luminous Florals

The beauty of a new beginning.

Imagine opening the windows on the first beautiful morning of spring.

Sunlight moves across the floor. The air feels lighter. There's a fresh bunch of flowers on the table, perhaps a cup of coffee nearby, and the entire day is still ahead of you.

There is something wonderfully optimistic about moments like these.

Goldrise captures that feeling.

Its fragrance character begins with the brightness of citrus, bringing together the sparkling freshness of bergamot and the delicate floral personality of neroli.

Mimosa and jasmine introduce a softer, more luminous dimension, while earthy patchouli and green nuances give the composition depth and contrast.

There is freshness, but also warmth.

Something joyful without being overly sweet.

Radiant, yet beautifully grounded.

Where Might Goldrise Belong?

Imagine a living room filled with morning light, pale woods and fresh flowers.

A beautifully designed fashion boutique opening its doors for the day.

A creative studio where colour, ideas and imagination are part of the surroundings.

Or perhaps it's simply a Saturday morning at home, with music playing and the pleasure of a day without too many plans.

Goldrise feels particularly lovely in places that celebrate light, freshness and a sense of possibility.

For those drawn to citrus perfumes but looking for something more nuanced than a straightforward fresh scent, its floral character and earthy depth offer an interesting contrast.

The atmosphere: Luminous, joyful, gently uplifting.

The moment: A fresh beginning, a leisurely morning, a little sunshine on an ordinary day.

Heartwood — Warm Woods and Understated Elegance

The beauty of depth, warmth and intimacy.

There is a particular elegance to spaces that don't need to impress.

A room filled with old books. A beautifully worn leather chair. Dark wood, textured linen, ceramics collected over time.

Perhaps it's late afternoon.

The light is becoming softer, and a conversation has lasted longer than anyone expected.

Everything feels comfortable, familiar and quietly beautiful.

This is the world of Heartwood.

A fragrance built around precious woods, delicate rose and aromatic resins, Heartwood has a rich, layered character.

Sandalwood and cedarwood bring warmth and structure, while frankincense, myrrh and balsamic resins create a deeper, more intriguing dimension.

Soft rose introduces tenderness, balancing the strength of the woods.

And somewhere beneath it all, there is a subtle suggestion of smoke.

Not something heavy or overwhelming, but a gentle shadow that gives the composition character.

Heartwood is a fragrance of contrasts.

Strong, yet soft.

Warm, yet never overly sweet.

Familiar, yet quietly mysterious.

Where Might Heartwood Belong?

Picture an intimate art gallery, a boutique specialising in natural materials or a carefully designed interior with warm colours, sculptural furniture and soft lighting.

At home, Heartwood might accompany an evening spent reading, listening to jazz or enjoying an unhurried conversation over a glass of wine.

It feels particularly suited to spaces where elegance comes from materials, craftsmanship and attention to detail rather than decoration.

If you love woody perfumes, sandalwood, aromatic resins or compositions that balance depth with softness, Heartwood may feel immediately familiar.

The atmosphere: Warm, grounded, intimate and sophisticated.

The moment: Long conversations, beautiful interiors, an evening without hurry.

Stillbreath — Fresh Green and Woody Incense

A little wilderness indoors.

Imagine walking through a forest just after the rain.

The air is cool and humid.

The ground is dark with moisture. There are crushed leaves beneath your feet and the fresh, slightly mineral scent of trees, moss and earth.

Perhaps you stop for a moment.

There is nothing particularly dramatic about the scene.

And maybe that's what makes it so beautiful.

Stillbreath is inspired by this kind of natural simplicity.

Its composition explores fresh greens, aromatic woods and earthy notes.

Fir needle, cypress and juniper bring a distinctly forest-like character, while clary sage, vetiver and oakmoss contribute texture and depth.

Subtle mineral nuances evoke the coolness of damp ground.

The result is fresh, but not in the familiar sense of clean laundry or conventional air fresheners.

It has texture.

A little wildness.

The character of nature without trying to make it too polished.

Where Might Stillbreath Belong?

Imagine a minimalist interior where the materials speak for themselves.

Natural stone, pale wood, linen curtains and a few beautiful objects.

A contemporary gallery with generous daylight and room to appreciate the work.

Or a creative workspace where simplicity and a connection to nature are part of the design.

At home, Stillbreath might be the fragrance you choose on a rainy Sunday afternoon, while reading beside the window or enjoying a little time away from the noise of the city.

For those who love green perfumes, mossy fragrances and the scents of forests and botanical gardens, Stillbreath offers a different interpretation of freshness.

One that feels earthy, atmospheric and beautifully uncontrived.

The atmosphere: Fresh, green, contemplative and quietly expansive.

The moment: Rain against the windows, a peaceful afternoon, the pleasure of simplicity.

Velvetglow — Soft Vanilla and Comforting Warmth

The pleasure of staying in.

Some evenings are simply too lovely to leave the house.

The lights are low. There's a soft blanket on the sofa, a favourite record playing and perhaps something delicious waiting in the kitchen.

Outside, the world carries on.

Inside, everything feels warm and familiar.

Velvetglow belongs to these moments.

But this is not a conventional sugary vanilla fragrance.

Its composition brings together vanilla, tonka and soft woods with the richness of balsamic resins.

Benzoin and labdanum introduce warmth and depth, while delicate floral, spicy and gourmand nuances bring unexpected complexity.

There are subtle suggestions of cocoa and the richness of natural materials warmed by the skin.

Comforting, certainly.

But also quietly sensual.

The kind of fragrance that feels intimate without being obvious.

Softness with a little mystery beneath it.

Where Might Velvetglow Belong?

Imagine a softly lit living room on a winter evening.

A beautiful guesthouse with warm textiles, natural materials and a welcoming atmosphere.

Or an intimate dinner with friends, where the room has been prepared with candles, music and thoughtful details, and a little incense is enjoyed before everyone gathers around the table.

Velvetglow also feels at home in cosy reading spaces and those corners of a house where we retreat to enjoy some time alone.

If you enjoy vanilla perfumes, warm amber-like accords, delicate woods and fragrances that feel soft and enveloping, Velvetglow might be your favourite.

The atmosphere: Comforting, sensual, warm and intimate.

The moment: Evening light, familiar pleasures, the luxury of having nowhere else to be.

How to Choose the Right Perfume Incense Fragrance

Perhaps you already know. Maybe one of these imaginary spaces immediately felt familiar, or you recognised a fragrance note you have always loved. But if you're still deciding, start with the atmosphere rather than the individual ingredients.

Do you enjoy the freshness of citrus and flowers, or are you drawn to the richness of woods and resins? Do you prefer green, earthy fragrances reminiscent of nature, or the soft warmth of vanilla and balsamic notes? Think about the fragrances you already enjoy wearing. Perhaps you're naturally drawn to woody perfumes, or you find yourself returning to citrus compositions. Your preferences may offer a useful starting point. But something interesting often happens when we begin exploring fragrance for our surroundings.

What we enjoy wearing is not necessarily what we enjoy smelling in a room.

A bright citrus fragrance may feel wonderful in a living space, even if you usually wear deeper, warmer perfumes. Or you might discover that a woody incense composition offers a beautiful contrast to a light-filled interior. There's no correct answer. And just as we don't wear the same perfume for every occasion, there is no reason to enjoy only one fragrance in our surroundings.

Goldrise might belong to a bright morning, while Heartwood feels right for the evening.

Stillbreath could accompany a rainy afternoon, while Velvetglow might become a favourite during the colder months.

You might even discover that your preferences change with the seasons, the weather or simply your mood. That's part of the pleasure of exploring fragrance.

The Same Room, Four Different Stories

What fascinates me most about scent is how it can change our experience of a familiar place.

Imagine a beautifully simple interior. A wooden table. A linen sofa. Bookshelves. Perhaps a vase with a few branches. Nothing particularly extravagant. Just a room that feels like home. Now imagine introducing Goldrise, with its bright citrus and luminous florals. The space might take on a lighter, more playful character. Replace it with Heartwood, and the same room could feel warmer and more intimate. With Stillbreath, the atmosphere becomes fresh, green and reminiscent of the outdoors. And with Velvetglow, the feeling turns soft, inviting and gently comforting.

The furniture hasn't moved.

The colours haven't changed.

Nothing visible is different. And yet, our experience of the space may have changed entirely.

This is what I find so interesting about fragrance as part of interior design. It is another way of expressing personality. Another way to make a place feel considered. And sometimes, another way to appreciate a space we already love.

Four Natural Perfume Compositions, Handcrafted in Amsterdam

At sense • studio • amsterdam, I approach incense as a form of perfumery.

Each fragrance begins with a composition I have developed using nature-derived aromatic materials, including essential oils, botanical extracts, precious woods, resins and naturally derived aromatic isolates.

Goldrise, Heartwood, Stillbreath and Velvetglow are four of my five signature fragrances.

Each has its own personality, and each exists in different expressions across the collection. But translating a perfume into incense involves more than simply adding the original fragrance to a new product. A composition behaves differently in alcohol, oil, wax and burning incense. The aromatic materials interact with their surroundings, and the experience changes depending on how the fragrance is released. That's why every form requires its own formulation, experimentation and refinement.

For my Japanese-style perfume incense, I combine aromatic woods, botanical powders and resins with carefully developed fragrance accords.

Each slender stick is shaped by hand in small batches in Amsterdam.

There is no bamboo core. The aromatic mixture forms the stick itself, slowly releasing fragrance as it burns.

The sticks are then allowed to dry before they are evaluated and prepared for the collection.

Every set includes ten handmade sticks, each with an approximate burning time of thirty minutes, and a small handmade ceramic holder.

Because the sticks are coreless, an unlit stick can also be broken into smaller pieces for a shorter experience, provided the piece remains securely supported.

As with all burning incense, choose a suitable, well-ventilated space, use a stable heat-resistant surface with an ash-catching dish, keep it away from flammable materials and never leave it burning unattended.

For me, this is a contemporary interpretation of an ancient craft.

A meeting between the art of fragrance composition, natural aromatic materials and the pleasure of making something by hand.

Which Atmosphere Feels Like Yours?

Perhaps it is the light of Goldrise. The depth of Heartwood. The freshness of Stillbreath. Or the softness of Velvetglow. Maybe you'll find that each one belongs to a different part of your life.

Because discovering fragrance isn't only about recognising particular notes.

It is also about the memories, places and moments we associate with them. The spaces we return to. The things we find beautiful. And the feelings we would like to make a little more room for. I believe fragrance should be explored with curiosity, without too many rules or expectations.

Sometimes you'll know immediately that you love a particular composition. Sometimes a fragrance surprises you. And sometimes, the one you least expected becomes your favourite.

Perhaps the most beautiful way to choose a fragrance is simply to discover which one feels like yours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing Perfume Incense

How do I choose the right incense fragrance?

Begin with the types of fragrances you naturally enjoy and the atmosphere you want to create. Citrus and florals can feel bright and luminous, while woods and resins often suggest warmth and depth. Green compositions may evoke nature, while vanilla and balsamic notes can feel soft and comforting. The best choice is always personal.

What is the difference between Goldrise, Heartwood, Stillbreath and Velvetglow?

Goldrise combines bright citrus, luminous florals and earthy depth. Heartwood explores warm woods, delicate rose and aromatic resins. Stillbreath is fresh and green, inspired by forests, moss and damp earth. Velvetglow brings together soft vanilla, warm woods and comforting balsamic notes. Each offers a different fragrance character and interpretation of atmosphere.

Which incense fragrance is best for the evening?

If you enjoy warm and intimate fragrances, Heartwood and Velvetglow are lovely possibilities. Heartwood offers woody and resinous depth, while Velvetglow is softer, with vanilla and comforting warmth. However, fragrance is personal, and a fresh or citrus composition can be just as enjoyable in the evening.

Can I enjoy different incense fragrances in the same room?

Absolutely. You can choose different fragrances for different moments, seasons or personal preferences. The same space may feel brighter with citrus and florals, more intimate with warm woods, or fresher with green notes. Enjoy one fragrance at a time, start with a short burn in a well-ventilated room and allow the air to clear between different fragrances.
